About this position

The University of Manchester is offering a fully funded 3.5-year PhD position in the Department of Chemical Engineering, focusing on the high-throughput screening of separation systems for e-waste recycling. As the use of digital devices and data centres grows, the volume of electronic waste (e-waste) is expected to rise significantly, making closed-loop recycling and the recovery of valuable metals increasingly important for a sustainable, circular economy.

This project addresses the challenge of developing cost-effective and environmentally friendly methods to separate target metals from complex aqueous mixtures, which often contain multiple ions at varying and dilute concentrations. The research will centre on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), a scalable separation technology where metal ions are selectively transferred from an aqueous phase to an organic phase using tailored extractants. The design of these extraction systems is complex, involving the selection of extractants, diluents, phase modifiers, and understanding their interactions, all of which influence separation performance and environmental impact.

The successful candidate will develop an automated, lab-scale experimental platform to systematically explore this chemical design space. The aim is to identify extraction systems that offer high selectivity, reduced chemical usage, and lower environmental impact. The project provides hands-on experience in lab automation, robotics, and data-driven optimisation, equipping students with skills highly valued in both academia and industry. Specialised training will be available at the Innovation Centre in Digital Molecular Technology (iDMT) at the University of Cambridge, providing access to state-of-the-art facilities and a vibrant research community.

Applicants should hold or be about to obtain at least an upper second-class undergraduate honours degree (or equivalent) in chemical engineering or chemistry. Desirable qualifications include research experience in chemical separations, solvent extraction, or AI for Science, as well as proficiency in Python programming, and experience with 3D printing and spectroscopy. The position is open to home students with settled status, but overseas students are encouraged to inquire about related opportunities.

Funding is available for excellent candidates through competence-based faculty funding, with application deadlines on 19th December 2025 and, if necessary, a second round on 13th March 2026. The University of Manchester also offers a range of scholarships, studentships, and awards for both UK and international postgraduate researchers. The anticipated start date is October 2026.
