The University of Edinburgh's School of Engineering is offering a fully funded PhD studentship as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network “Advanced Network Connectivity using Harmonious Optical and Radio Technologies (ANCHOR)”. This prestigious opportunity focuses on the integration of underwater and terrestrial communication networks, aiming to extend high-speed wireless data transfer to underwater environments. Such advancements have significant implications for environmental protection, national security, mineral exploration, and the monitoring of vital underwater infrastructure.

The research will delve into underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), a rapidly growing field with recent laboratory demonstrations achieving Gbps data rates. However, the challenge remains to ensure reliable, robust, and resilient data transfer in the complex underwater channel. The project will investigate UOWC and explore methods to link underwater networks with broader land and space communication systems.

Key objectives include studying the radiative transfer theoretical framework of photon propagation underwater, formulating optimal signalling and waveform designs for UOWC channels, and developing new resilient waveforms. The candidate will also create computer-based simulations to evaluate performance and utilize existing UOWC channel emulators to demonstrate feasibility.

The ideal candidate will possess a first degree and MSc/MEng in physics, electronic and electrical engineering, or a related discipline. A strong passion for experimental work and proficiency in mathematical modelling techniques are essential. The studentship is open to Home and International students, with funding covering tuition fees, a generous salary, consumables, and travel budget. Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months in the past 36 months to qualify for funding.
