About this position

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is seeking motivated MSc and PhD students to join a new research group focused on climate change and its impacts on agriculture and water resources. The group, led by Corey Lesk, investigates the dynamics of precipitation intensification, water-cycle amplification under warming, and the role of vegetation in land-atmosphere interactions. Research employs both statistical and process-based modeling approaches to address critical questions in environmental science, Earth science, and agriculture.

Key research topics include:

  • Dynamics of precipitation intensification and water-cycle amplification under climate warming
  • Climate change impacts on global agriculture and land-surface water availability
  • Role of vegetation in land-atmosphere interactions

Applicants should have a strong quantitative background in physical geography, Earth sciences, atmospheric science, hydrology, environmental science, or related fields. For the PhD program, an MSc is required. French language proficiency is required for the MSc program, but not for the PhD program. Interest in climate, hydrology, process-based modeling, and/or data analysis is expected. Programming experience (Python, R, MATLAB) or modeling skills are considered assets.

Funding is currently pending, but students are encouraged to apply for external fellowships such as FRQNT (for Québec residents) and NSERC (for Canadian residents). Typical stipends range from CA$20,000 to CA$40,000 per year, depending on degree level and funding source. Start dates are flexible, from Summer 2026 through Winter 2027.

To apply, send a brief CV and a short statement of research interests to [email protected]. Applications are considered on a rolling basis, and prospective students are welcome to contact the supervisor to discuss potential projects and funding options.
