About this position

Macquarie University, in partnership with CSIRO, Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, and industry partners Affectable and Resonait, is offering a prestigious PhD and MRes+PhD opportunity in the field of neurofeedback technology for sleep and mental health. This project investigates how modulating brain network activity through neurofeedback can improve sleep quality and mental health outcomes. The research will focus on understanding EEG signatures of resting state networks (RSN) during wake and sleep, validating rs-EEG algorithms, and piloting neurofeedback interventions to enhance sleep and mental health.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary supervisory team including Professor Christopher Gordon and Associate Professor Angela D’Rozario (Macquarie University), Dr Navin Cooray and Dr Javier Urriola (CSIRO), and industry supervisors Dr Cameron Higgins (Resonait) and Pete Field (Affectable). The program offers a unique translational research experience, combining academic, clinical, and industry perspectives.

Applicants should have a background in neuroscience, psychology, biomedical science, or a related field, with experience in scientific experimentation, data analysis, and strong communication skills. Programming skills in Matlab, Python, or R are desirable, as is prior research experience in electrophysiology or neuroimaging. Only Australian or New Zealand citizens or permanent residents are eligible. Candidates with a Masters by coursework without a major research component may qualify for the MRes Y2 + PhD pathway.

The scholarship provides a stipend of $47,000–$48,000 per annum (2026 rate), a tuition fee offset, and a project expense and development package starting from $13,000 per year. The program includes a three-month industry internship and structured professional development. The student will be based at Macquarie University and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, with industry engagement at Affectable and Resonait, and access to CSIRO resources.

To apply, contact Professor Christopher Gordon at [email protected] with the subject 'iPhD Application in neurofeedback', including a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and at least two referees. Applications close on 30 April 2026 or until the position is filled. This is an exceptional opportunity for candidates passionate about neuroscience, sleep research, and translational health technology.
