About this position

The Barz Group at the University of Stuttgart, led by Professor Stefanie Barz, is coordinating the QCyber joint research project, which focuses on developing secure quantum applications for real-world networks. The project aims to move multipartite quantum communication out of controlled laboratory environments and into existing fiber infrastructure, enabling secure quantum communication and networked computing across a six-node network in Stuttgart over distances of up to 20 km.

QCyber is a collaboration between the University of Stuttgart, The Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg, Technische Universität Berlin, and industry partner Swabian Instruments, with associated partners Nokia and ARENA2036. The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) with a total of six million euros over three years, supporting both research and personnel.

The research covers a wide range of quantum technologies, including secure quantum-based communication among multiple users, quantum e-voting for verifiable and anonymous elections, and secure quantum-based cloud computing. The project will test these applications in a real-world fiber-optic network, integrating quantum applications into conventional cybersecurity systems and exploring deployment scenarios in areas such as vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and smart factories.

Open PhD and postdoc positions are available within the QCyber project. Candidates with backgrounds in quantum physics, quantum information, computer science, or electrical engineering are encouraged to apply. The positions offer the opportunity to work in a leading research environment, collaborating with academic and industry partners on cutting-edge quantum technologies. Funding is provided for the duration of the project, covering salary and research expenses.
