The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate position in Semantic Web for Autonomous and Adaptable Urban Services. This PhD position is part of the interdisciplinary UrbanBREATH project, funded under the Driving Urban Transitions (DUT) Partnership. The project aims to measure, model, and mitigate air pollution in urban environments by integrating low-cost sensing, community engagement, and data-driven policy recommendations. The research will focus on developing semantically enriched urban services to improve air quality and optimize energy consumption and carbon footprint across various urban stakeholders, including residents, landlords, infrastructure owners, utility companies, and recycling companies.

As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to the research, development, and demonstration of methodologies for building autonomous and adaptive urban services. You will collaborate with UrbanBREATH project partners, participate in the Knowledge-based Engineering and Knowledge-driven Systems research group, and engage in international activities such as conferences and research stays. The position offers opportunities for academic publication and popular science dissemination.

Your supervisor will be Associate Professor Andrei Lobov. The position requires a relevant Master's degree in industrial ICT, information systems, IoT, HVAC engineering, sustainable design in construction, or equivalent, with a strong academic record (B or better on NTNU's grading scale). Applicants must demonstrate good skills in mathematics, programming, and information systems, as well as excellent English proficiency. Preferred qualifications include programming experience (Python, OOA/OOD/OOP), semantic modeling, knowledge representation, automated reasoning, familiarity with AI frameworks and APIs, and skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language.

The position is fully funded, offering a gross salary of NOK 550,800 per annum for three years, with a 2% statutory pension fund deduction.
