About this position
The University of Stavanger is offering a fully funded PhD Fellowship in Experience Design, affiliated with the IMMERSE project at the Department of Innovation, Leadership and Marketing, School of Business and Law. This three-year, full-time position provides an excellent opportunity for academic and professional development through a structured PhD program in Social Sciences, starting from 1 August 2026. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment and contribute to the IMMERSE project, which investigates the psychological and social mechanisms underlying immersive museum experiences.
The IMMERSE project explores how visitors’ perceptions of time, space, and social surroundings influence the depth of immersion in museum contexts. The PhD research will involve qualitative methods such as observations and in-depth interviews to identify patterns in visitor experiences and social interactions. The candidate will also design and test field-based experiments in collaboration with museum partners, including Museum Stavanger and Lillehammer Museum. Additionally, the fellow will help develop a research-based guide, 'Designing for Immersion,' aimed at enhancing museum visitor engagement and inclusivity.
Applicants must hold a five-year master's degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as marketing, consumer behavior, service management, service design, psychology, museum studies, or tourism, with strong academic results (minimum B grade or equivalent). Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of a Scandinavian language is advantageous. International applicants must provide valid English test scores unless exempt. Candidates should demonstrate motivation, research potential, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
The position is externally funded by the Research Council of Norway and offers a competitive salary (NOK 550,800 gross per year), automatic membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and a comprehensive benefits package including health services, generous parental leave, and relocation support. The university values diversity and encourages applications from all qualified candidates, including those with disabilities, gaps in employment, or immigrant backgrounds. Women are especially encouraged to apply.
To apply, submit your application via the Jobbnorge portal, including a preliminary project proposal, CV, references, certificates/diplomas, Diploma Supplement (if required), documentation of English proficiency (if required), and any relevant publications. The application deadline is 10 February 2026. For further information, contact Head of Department Silje Haus-Reve ([email protected]) or Project Leader Olga Gjerald ([email protected]).
