About this position
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim is offering two PhD fellowships in Mathematical Sciences. NTNU is Norway’s largest university environment within mathematical sciences, with 75 permanent staff members and over 55 doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. The department conducts internationally recognized research in areas such as algebra, analysis, didactics of mathematics, differential equations, geometry/topology, numerical analysis, optimization, and statistics. Research is often interdisciplinary, involving collaborations with other scientific fields, industry, and external research institutions.
These PhD positions are open to excellent and highly motivated candidates interested in any of the department’s main research disciplines. The successful candidates will pursue a doctoral education leading to a PhD degree, with opportunities for teaching and other career-enhancing duties. The department values diversity and aims to reflect the diversity of society in its staff, encouraging applications from all qualified individuals regardless of gender, background, or career interruptions.
Eligibility: Applicants must hold a relevant Master’s degree in mathematical sciences, equivalent to a five-year Norwegian study program (300 credits, with 120 at the master’s level). Final-year MSc students may apply, but employment will be postponed until the degree and thesis are completed. A strong academic background and proficiency in written and spoken English are required. Preference is given to candidates who can strengthen or bridge current research areas, and familiarity with Norwegian or another Scandinavian language and/or programming (Python, Julia, R) is advantageous.
Funding: The positions offer a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, with a 2% statutory contribution to the State Pension Fund. The employment period is 3 years, with the possibility of extension for up to one year for career-enhancing work. Employees benefit from favorable terms as members of the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and access to a range of employee benefits.
Application Process: Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no and include a tentative project plan (written with a potential supervisor), a brief statement from the potential supervisor, a letter of motivation, CV, transcripts, diplomas, documentation of English proficiency, and other supporting documents. All documents must be in Norwegian, a Scandinavian language, or English. If invited to interview, applicants must bring certified copies of certificates and diplomas.
The application deadline is 8 April 2026. For more information about the department’s research areas, visit https://www.ntnu.edu/imf/research.
