This PhD opportunity at Lancaster University focuses on quantifying Antarctic ice loss using novel high-resolution satellite data streams, advanced statistical algorithms, and high-performance computing. The project aims to develop new estimates of ice sheet mass loss by leveraging satellite-derived Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) and efficient GPU-enabled processing flows. The research addresses urgent questions about the rate of polar ice loss and its implications for future sea level rise, with direct relevance to climate change and coastal community impacts. The successful candidate will work under a multidisciplinary supervisory team, including experts in statistics, computer science, and environmental science: Prof Mal McMillan (Lancaster University), Dr Dave McKay (University of Edinburgh), Dr Jenny Maddalena (Lancaster University), and Dr Israel Martinez Hernandez (Lancaster University). The project is part of the ExaGEO DLA initiative, which provides comprehensive training in exascale computing and multidisciplinary research across geoscience, computational engineering, and environmental science.
