About this position

Imperial College London is inviting applications for its PhD programme in Chemical Engineering, based at the South Kensington Campus in London, UK. This prestigious programme offers a 3–4 year advanced research degree, providing in-depth specialist training in Chemical Engineering and related disciplines such as materials science, biomedical engineering, and environmental science. The Department of Chemical Engineering is renowned for its state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities, including the Automated High-Throughput Platform Suite, the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering, and the Sustainable Futures Lab.

Research at Imperial addresses global challenges, with opportunities in low-carbon energy technologies, zero-pollution and sustainable processes, vaccine manufacturing, medical technologies, process systems engineering, and advanced computational and experimental methods. Students will join a vibrant research community of over 220 PhD students and 100+ postdocs, benefiting from an inclusive and collaborative environment recognized by the Silver Athena Swan Award for gender equality and support for academic women.

PhD candidates will receive specialist research training, access to cutting-edge facilities, and opportunities for professional development through the Graduate School. There are also chances to work as Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) to gain teaching experience. The Department fosters interdisciplinary research, with themes spanning biomedical engineering, industrial biotechnology, energy and environmental engineering, materials, multiphase transport processes, computational chemical engineering, thermodynamics, reaction engineering, separations, and soft matter engineering.

Applicants must submit a complete application via the Imperial College online admissions system, including full academic transcripts, a personal statement, English language certification (if applicable), and contact details for two referees (at least one academic). The programme is open to candidates with a strong background in Chemical Engineering or related fields. All applicants are automatically considered for departmental and College-administered scholarships, including EPSRC-funded Doctoral Training Partnerships, unless they have already secured independent funding. Some funding is project-specific and may be linked to individual supervisors.

For more information and to apply, visit the official programme page or contact the Chem Eng PhD Team at [email protected]. This is an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers interested in chemical engineering, materials science, nanoscience, medical physics, cancer imaging, MRI, perovskites, optoelectronics, and computational methods such as DFT.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
