About this position

The University of Queensland is inviting applications for a PhD position in Fire Safety Engineering, focusing on the integration of external wall systems into the fire safety strategy of buildings. This project is part of the ARC-funded FRIASA Industrial Transformation Research Hub, which aims to address critical challenges in fire engineering practice and improve the resilience of the built environment to fire. The research group collaborates with international partners, including Kingspan, to advance fire safety and performance across building design.

The successful candidate will join the UQ Fire research group in the School of Civil Engineering, working under the supervision of Associate Professor David Lange, Dr Anwar Orabi, Dr Wenxuan Wu, and David Morrisset. The project investigates how combustible elements in exterior wall systems impact vertical fire spread and overall building safety, with the goal of developing holistic fire safety strategies that harmonize all building components.

The scholarship provides a living stipend of $37,500 per annum (tax free, 2026 rate, indexed annually) and covers tuition fees. Applicants should have a strong academic background in civil engineering, fire safety engineering, or fire science, with knowledge of fire engineering and flammability considered highly desirable. Selection is competitive and based on academic record, publications, honours, awards, and employment history.

To apply, submit an expression of interest (EOI) for the PhD program by 3 April 2026, including the required scholarship details. For further information or to discuss suitability, contact Associate Professor David Lange at [email protected].
