Carleton University, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Canada, is offering a fully funded PhD position focused on the study of scandium and rare metal mineralization associated with the Crater Lake deposit. This research opportunity is part of the Natural Resources Canada Research Affiliate Program and targets students with expertise in igneous petrology, geochemistry, mineralogy, and geochronology. The project aims to address critical knowledge gaps in the formation of scandium and rare earth element (REE) ore systems, with a focus on the Mistastin Batholith and the Crater Lake Sc-REE deposit in northern Quebec, Canada.

The successful candidate will conduct advanced mineralogical and geochemical investigations using techniques such as SEM-EDS, EMPA, LA-ICP-MS, TIMS, and SHRIMP on samples from drill cores and outcrops. The research will involve laboratory analyses at Carleton University and the Geological Survey of Canada, as well as possible fieldwork at Scandium Canada Ltd.’s Crater Lake exploration camp during the summers of 2027 and 2028. The candidate will also participate in group meetings with industry and government partners, present at conferences, and publish research findings.

Applicants must hold or be accepted into a PhD program at Carleton University in igneous petrology and geochemistry, and possess an MSc in Earth Science, Geology, or a related field. Required skills include fieldwork experience, rock and mineral identification, petrographic analysis, geochemical techniques, and scientific writing. Good communication skills in English, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and a valid driver’s license are essential. Preference is given to Canadian citizens and permanent residents; international applicants will be considered only if no qualified Canadians apply.
