This PhD opportunity at The University of Manchester focuses on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in the context of data visualisation. Data visualisations are essential tools for communicating research findings and information to both expert and non-expert audiences, appearing in journal articles, posters, presentations, newspapers, television, and infographics. The interpretation and perception of these visualisations are shaped by various design features, such as scatterplot point size and opacity, axis truncation, and the physical size of the visualisation. These factors can significantly affect how users interact with and understand data, regardless of their statistical or graphical literacy.
The project is based in the Department of Computer Science and is supported by a research team with a strong track record in empirical studies of visualisation design, drawing on perceptual theories and conducting large-scale, reproducible online experiments. The scope of the PhD is open-ended, allowing the successful candidate to develop their own research niche within the data visualisation landscape. You will contribute to a growing body of literature on data visualisation design, informed by rigorous empirical study and a commitment to open and reproducible research practices.
Funding is available for excellent candidates through competence-based faculty funding, which covers tuition fees and provides a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), with annual increases expected. Self-funded students are also welcome to apply. The anticipated start date is October 2026, but applications are accepted year-round. The research team encourages early application, as the advert may be removed before the deadline.
Eligibility requirements include at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Applicants should demonstrate a strong academic background and relevant experience in computer science, information technology, or related fields. Non-native English speakers must provide an English language certificate. The application process requires submission of transcripts, CV, a supporting statement outlining motivation and relevant experience, and contact details for two referees with official university/work email addresses.
Equality, diversity, and inclusion are central to the University’s ethos, and applications are encouraged from candidates of all backgrounds, including those returning from career breaks or seeking flexible study arrangements. The research team is committed to producing high-quality work for publication in leading venues and values diversity as a driver of research creativity and impact.
