About this position

Aalborg University is offering a fully funded PhD position in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Department of Society and Politics, focusing on migration, retirement, and later-life integration among non-Western immigrants in Denmark. The project investigates how retirement affects decisions about return migration and opportunities for social and political integration in later life, using high-quality Danish administrative register data and survey data. The research is quantitative and theory-driven, requiring strong statistical analysis skills.

The successful candidate will join the Centre for Comparative Welfare Studies (CCWS) and be supervised by Associate Professor Jeevitha Yogachandiran Qvist. The position includes a planned 3-month research stay at the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI), fostering international collaboration. The PhD student will be involved in all core aspects of the project, including developing research questions, conducting statistical analyses, and contributing to international journal publications and conferences.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in a relevant social science discipline (e.g., sociology, economics, political science), strong quantitative and statistical skills, and experience with survey research and large datasets. Familiarity with Danish register data is a plus. Proficiency in English is required, with IELTS 7 or TOEFL 100+ for non-native speakers or those without an English-based degree. Danish language skills are not mandatory but are advantageous due to data documentation. The position requires completion of 30 ECTS credits through PhD courses and 600 hours of teaching over three years.

The PhD stipend is fully funded, covering salary, tuition, and benefits according to the Danish AC collective agreement. The application deadline is 15 March 2026, with the position starting from 1 May 2026 or soon thereafter. Applicants should submit an application letter, CV, diplomas, a project description (max 5 pages), language test results if applicable, and other relevant documents via Aalborg University’s recruitment system. For further information, contact Associate Professor Jeevitha Yogachandiran Qvist ([email protected]) or Lene Møller ([email protected]).
