About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, supervised by Dr Jinghua Tang, focuses on the development of multifunctional soft smart materials for adaptive sensing, actuation, and energy harvesting in biomedical loaded-body interfaces. The research aims to address critical challenges faced by people with disabilities, lower-limb amputees, and wheelchair users, such as poor pressure distribution, discomfort, and tissue damage at the interface between the body and assistive devices.

The project will develop advanced materials, including polypyrrole (PPy)-based composites and ionic polymer-metal composites (IPMC), which enable integrated sensing, actuation, and energy harvesting. These materials are designed to create adaptive interfaces for applications such as plantar shoe inserts for people with foot dysfunctions, residual limb-socket linings for amputees, and wheelchair seating cushions. The goal is to enhance comfort, prevent injury, and promote independence by enabling real-time pressure adjustment, conforming to body changes, and harvesting energy from movement.

Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in engineering, materials science, or a related field. The University offers a range of funding opportunities, including Horizon Europe fee waivers for qualifying students and competition-based bursaries and studentships that may cover tuition fees and provide a stipend. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.
