Description

A fully funded 4-year PhD position is available at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), The Netherlands, in collaboration with the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Germany. The research focuses on ocean dynamics and climate impacts, particularly using high-resolution models and observational data to study the evolving Arctic Ocean circulation and its implications for global climate systems. The project aims to understand how reductions in sea ice and changes in ocean currents may affect the delivery of freshwater to sub-Arctic regions, with potential impacts on global ocean circulation and climate at lower latitudes. As a PhD student, you will combine advanced climate models with observational data from gliders, CTDs, and remote sensing to investigate air-sea-ice interactions, extreme events, and future trends in the Arctic Ocean. There is also an opportunity to participate in a research cruise in the Arctic, expanding the observational dataset and gaining valuable seagoing experience. The position offers deep knowledge in climate science, data processing, and the integration of models and observations, as well as the chance to work with leading scientists in the Netherlands and Germany. Applicants should have a relevant master's degree in climate science, oceanography, environmental science, or a related field. Experience with high-resolution models, large datasets, and observational techniques is desirable. The position is fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend according to TU Delft's PhD regulations. The application deadline is January 21, 2026. For more information and to apply, follow the provided links or contact the supervisor.

Funding

The position is fully funded for 4 years. Funding covers tuition and provides a stipend/salary as per Delft University of Technology's PhD regulations. Additional support for research activities, including participation in Arctic research cruises, is available.

How to apply

Apply by following the link provided in the announcement. Prepare your application materials, including CV and relevant academic documents. Submit your application before January 21, 2026. Contact the supervisor for further details if needed.

Requirements
