This PhD project at the University of Strathclyde focuses on developing sustainable polymeric encapsulation solutions for pest control, addressing the urgent need for environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional pesticides in agriculture. The research aims to protect and deliver natural substances, such as semiochemicals (pheromones) and biological control agents, using innovative bio-polymer based formulations. The project is structured in three stages: modification of commercially available polysaccharides to engineer polymers with targeted degradation properties, encapsulation of biological control agents alongside lure components to create a stimuli-responsive pest control system, and detailed characterisation and experimental evaluation of the developed capsules.
Students will gain hands-on experience in polymer chemistry, colloids, and sustainable chemistry approaches, working within a multidisciplinary environment supported by national and international collaborators. The project supports the development of a circular economy by incorporating industrial waste–derived materials. In addition to research, students will be registered for the Postgraduate Certificate in Researcher Development (PGCert), enhancing their skills and career prospects.
