The University of Amsterdam is offering a fully funded PhD position in Transformative Approaches in International Development, based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This opportunity is hosted by the Governance & Inclusive Development (GID) group and focuses on addressing global justice, inequality, and social change in the context of contemporary 'polycrises' such as climate change, conflict, instability, inequality, nationalism, and technological disruption. The successful candidate will be expected to challenge traditional development thinking and contribute to more just and inclusive futures.

Key research areas include international development, governance, global justice, and the impact of multiple crises on societies. The position involves designing and conducting independent research, engaging with current development debates, collaborating with communities, NGOs, and policymakers, and utilizing mixed methods (qualitative, quantitative, participatory). The candidate will also publish research, present at conferences, communicate findings to broader audiences, and teach for approximately 10% of their time.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in International Development or a related social science, demonstrate a strong interest in global inequalities and transformation, and have experience with mixed or participatory research methods. The ability to work with diverse communities and excellent English language skills are required. Additional assets include fieldwork experience, knowledge of relevant regions or languages, and experience working with NGOs or communities.

The position is fully funded for four years, offering a monthly salary of €3,059 – €3,881, plus an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% bonus.
