About this position

PhD opening in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Germany, in the Laboratory for Cellular Protein Biochemistry. The project focuses on how proteins fold, assemble, and are monitored by cellular quality-control systems, with a special emphasis on membrane proteins, endoplasmic reticulum membrane chaperones, and the molecular mechanisms of protein biogenesis and quality control.

The research is highly interdisciplinary, spanning protein biochemistry and cell biology. The lab is interested in mechanistic analyses of chaperones, multi-component chaperone machines, and how membrane-protein chaperones recognize and process their client proteins at the molecular level. Modern cell-biological approaches will be used, and the post references recent work in Nature Communications, Science, and EMBO Journal.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a Master's degree in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, or a related field. Experience in mammalian cell culture is required. Additional strengths in FACS, microscopy-based assays, genome editing (including endogenous tagging), viral transduction, and/or mass spectrometry are specifically welcomed.

Funding: the position is a doctoral research post at TUM with remuneration according to TV-L E13, 65%. The post is scheduled to start in July 2026.

Application deadline: 30 April 2026. Applicants must submit a single PDF containing a motivation letter, CV with publication list, degree certificates, and at least two references. Applications should be sent by email to [email protected]. The official job page is linked in the post.

This is a strong fit for students interested in cell biology, biochemistry, membrane proteins, protein folding, chaperones, and molecular cell biology at a leading European research university.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
