A fully funded PhD position is available at Université Laval (Québec City, Canada) under the supervision of Prof. Céline Vaneeckhaute. The research focuses on the remediation of Lake Saint-Augustin using combined phosphate adsorption and phytoremediation techniques, with both pilot and full-scale field implementation. The project aims to address persistent eutrophication and impaired water quality by developing scalable, real-world remediation strategies that combine reactive media for phosphate capture and nature-based solutions such as floating treatment wetlands.

The selected PhD candidate will assess phosphorus dynamics, design and deploy remediation units, evaluate adsorption and phytoremediation performance, and support the transition to full-scale implementation. Responsibilities include monitoring environmental benefits, developing recommendations for long-term lake management, and conducting significant fieldwork, including system installation and sampling campaigns. Methodologies involve water quality monitoring, adsorbent performance assessment, phytoremediation evaluation, and techno-economic analysis.

Applicants should have an MSc in Environmental Engineering, Water Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or related fields, with strong interest and experience in field research, lake remediation, and phosphorus management. Additional assets include experience with fieldwork, treatment systems, adsorption processes, wetlands, water quality analysis, data analysis (Excel, R, Python, MATLAB), and a valid driver’s license. The research group (BioEngine) offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment with strong municipal and regional collaborations, focusing on water treatment, nutrient recovery, circular economy, and environmental sustainability.
