About this position

A fully funded PhD position is available in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) and Crop Modeling at the Boreal Ecosystems Research Facility, Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team in the School of Science and the Environment, working at the intersection of soil science, agronomy, environmental modeling, and precision nutrient management.

The research focuses on quantifying nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and simulating crop yield responses under variable nitrogen application strategies. The project aims to measure N2O emissions under different fertilizer rates, model crop growth and yield using advanced simulation tools, integrate biogeochemical models (DNDC, DayCent, DSSAT, APSIM), and develop recommendations for sustainable nitrogen management. Collaboration opportunities exist with agronomists, soil scientists, hydrologists, modelers, and climate scientists.

Key responsibilities include designing and conducting field and greenhouse experiments, measuring N2O emissions, collecting and analyzing soil, plant, and environmental data, calibrating and validating simulation models, applying statistical and machine-learning tools, presenting research findings, and assisting with project reports and stakeholder engagement.

Applicants must have a master's degree in Soil Science, Agronomy, Environmental Science, Agricultural Engineering, Environmental Modeling, or a related discipline. Required skills include expertise in soil nutrient cycling, crop production, greenhouse gas emissions, fieldwork, laboratory analysis, biogeochemical/crop modeling, quantitative data analysis (R, Python, MATLAB), and strong communication skills. Assets include experience with N2O flux measurement methods, crop simulation models, GIS, remote sensing, precision agriculture tools, and a publication record.

The position offers a stipend of $25,000 per year for four years and is fully funded. The anticipated start date is May 1, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a single PDF file with a cover letter, CV, academic transcripts, and referee contact information to Dr. Lakshman Galagedara or Dr. Mumtaz Cheema. Applications are accepted until the position is filled.
