About this position

Ghent University’s HIV Cure Research Center (HCRC) is offering a PhD position for highly motivated researchers passionate about HIV cure science. The HCRC, led by Prof. Linos Vandekerckhove and Prof. Sarah Gerlo, is at the forefront of innovative HIV cure research, bridging patient-derived studies, in vitro/in vivo experiments, and clinical trials. The center focuses on understanding HIV reservoirs and persistence, developing novel assays for reservoir monitoring, and creating strategies to eradicate HIV.

The successful candidate will investigate the sources of viral rebound following HIV treatment interruption, utilizing advanced technologies such as Single Cell RNA Sequencing, ATAC-Sequencing, ChIP-seq, MIP-sequencing, bioinformatics, flow cytometry, and phenotypic analysis. The role provides access to unique patient samples and datasets, aiming to uncover molecular mechanisms driving HIV latency and persistence.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, Bioinformatics, or related fields, with a strong interest in immunology, virology, and translational research. Wet-lab skills (flow cytometry, PCR) and/or bioinformatics experience (Python, R, omics data) are required, along with excellent communication skills, teamwork, and motivation to apply for competitive PhD grants (e.g., FWO).

The position offers a full-time doctoral fellowship for up to 48 months, starting 1 September 2026. Benefits include a competitive, tax-free salary, 36 days of holiday, training, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The HCRC provides a multidisciplinary, international research environment with state-of-the-art facilities, offering the opportunity to contribute to groundbreaking HIV cure research.

To apply, send your CV, motivation letter (max 1 page), degrees/transcripts, research experience/publications, and 1–2 references to [email protected] or [email protected]. For more information, visit https://hivontrafelen.be/.
