About this position

The University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) is offering a fully funded PhD position in Multiscale Modelling of Radiation Damage in Particle Therapy as part of the Horizon Europe MSCA MS-RADAM Doctoral Network. This interdisciplinary project focuses on computational and experimental research at the interface of medical physics, radiobiology, and biomedical engineering. The successful candidate will join an international network of leading academic and industrial partners, benefiting from structured training, mobility, and career development opportunities provided by the MSCA programme.

The research will involve developing and applying computational models to study radiation-induced damage from the DNA level to multicellular systems, with applications in advanced radiotherapy techniques such as biologically-optimized particle therapy, FLASH radiotherapy, and spatially fractionated radiotherapy. The candidate will integrate radiation transport and radiobiological processes, validate models experimentally at the Particle Therapy Research Center (PARTREC), and collaborate with other MS-RADAM network partners. The project aims to translate physical dosimetric parameters into biologically meaningful endpoints, advancing the understanding of key phenomena in radiation-induced biodamage.

Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in applied physics, medical physics, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, systems biology, or a related field. Strong computational modelling and programming skills, excellent English proficiency, and a keen interest in multidisciplinary research are required. Candidates must not have lived or worked in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to July 2026, and must not already hold a doctoral degree. International mobility and willingness to undertake secondments are mandatory.

The position is funded for 36 months with an expected 12-month extension, offering a competitive salary (€3,108–€3,939/month), holiday and year-end bonuses, and additional MSCA mobility and family allowances.
