About this position
The Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Geneva is inviting applications for a 4-year PhD position in Reservoir Geology and Basin Analysis, focusing on the Oligocene continental Molasse in the Geneva region, Switzerland. The research is embedded within the Geo-Energy, Reservoir Geology and Basin Analysis Group and is part of the Swiss national ACHIEVE consortium, which aims to advance innovative geological solutions for Switzerland’s energy transition.
The PhD project will investigate sedimentology, basin analysis, and subsurface geo-energy applications, with a particular emphasis on geological storage for CO2 sequestration and subsurface heat storage. The research will combine fundamental and applied approaches, integrating field-based, laboratory, and modeling techniques such as sedimentological logging, core-based facies description, outcrop analysis, mineralogical and petrographic characterization, inorganic geochemistry, detrital zircon geochronology, petrophysical characterization, and process-based numerical simulations.
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Earth Sciences, Geology, or a related discipline, and demonstrate a strong interest in quantitative sedimentology, basin analysis, and reservoir geology. Experience in clastic sedimentology and facies description is highly advantageous. Candidates must be motivated to learn and apply diverse analytical and modeling methods, possess good communication skills in English, and ideally have sufficient spoken French to contribute to teaching assistant duties. A valid driving license recognized in France and Switzerland is required.
The position is fully funded for 4 years, with salary according to the Canton of Geneva’s salary class 8. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, interdisciplinary research group and benefit from close interaction with academic, industrial, and public-sector partners, as well as access to high-quality datasets and analytical facilities. The start date is Spring 2026.
To apply, send your CV and motivation letter to Prof. Andrea Moscariello at [email protected], indicating 'PhD Molasse' as the subject. For further details, visit the group’s web pages or contact the supervisor directly.
