PhD Position in Solvation Science – Integrated Graduate School (iGSS), Cluster of Excellence RESOLV Ruhr University Bochum in Germany

The Integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS) at Ruhr University Bochum, part of the Cluster of Excellence RESOLV, offers a dynamic PhD programme focused on solvation science. This interdisciplinary field explores how solvents influence chemical reactions and processes, bridging fundamental research and practical applications such as green technologies and smart sensors. The programme is conducted in English, with the option to write theses or attend courses in German at partner institutions.

iGSS collaborates with TU Dortmund University, University Duisburg-Essen, and several Max Planck Institutes, providing access to over 200 scientists and more than 50 affiliated research groups in the Ruhr region. The school supports over 80 graduate students, fostering early scientific independence, internationalisation, and a diversity-sensitive culture.

Applicants with top-level Master’s or Bachelor’s degrees in chemistry, physics, biochemistry, engineering, or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. The programme offers two tracks: Track I for Master’s degree holders (three-year structured PhD) and Track II for Bachelor’s degree holders (one-year preparatory phase followed by the PhD curriculum). The curriculum includes lectures, seminars, laboratory courses, international internships, annual workshops, and summer schools, all centred on solvation science.

Students benefit from structured research training, supervision, and career advisory services, including workshops and networking events with academia, industry, and government. International elements include guest lecturers, collaborative projects, and internships abroad. Support services for international students cover accommodation, visa matters, and integration programmes.

Funding is available for doctoral positions, with scholarships for the preparatory year and additional grants such as the Deutschlandstipendium (300 EUR/month) and graduation grants (up to 400 EUR/month). Students pay a social contribution fee (~330 EUR/semester) covering public transport, and living costs are estimated at a minimum of 950 EUR/month.
