About this position

Utrecht University is inviting applications for a fully funded 4-year PhD position in the Organic Chemistry and Catalysis (OCC) group, focusing on Stimuli-Responsive Coordination Chemistry. The project, supervised by Dr. Daniël Broere (Utrecht University) and Dr. Devin Boom (TNO), aims to develop a new class of stimuli-responsive ligands for dynamic and reversible modulation of metal–ligand interactions. This research will contribute to next-generation circular technologies for sustainable metal recovery, with a broader impact on environmental and economic sustainability.

The project centers on ligand design, exploring how ligands can be engineered to control metal binding, release, and recovery in response to external triggers. The research combines computational ligand design, synthesis, coordination chemistry, spectroscopic characterization, and electrochemical separation techniques. The interdisciplinary environment will also provide exposure to life cycle assessments and techno-economic analyses.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field, with a strong background in synthetic organic chemistry and coordination chemistry. Experience or interest in computational chemistry, electrochemistry, and photochemistry is desirable. Good communication skills, the ability to work independently and in teams, and proficiency in English are required.

The position is fully funded, with a gross monthly salary according to the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (Scale P). Utrecht University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including professional development opportunities, various types of leave, and access to sports and cultural activities. The starting date is flexible, ideally before Q3 of 2026.

To apply, send your application (motivation letter, CV, references, and grades) directly to Dr. Daniël Broere at [email protected], with 'NGF-PhD-UU' in the subject line. For more information about the research group, visit broerelab.com.
