About this position
The Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School (HBIGS) at Heidelberg University offers a dynamic and interdisciplinary PhD programme in biosciences. HBIGS is renowned for its research excellence in areas such as developmental biology, infectious diseases, molecular and cellular biology, molecular biotechnology and biophysics, molecular plant sciences, neurosciences, structural biology and biochemistry, systems biology, bioinformatics, mathematical biology, and molecular medicine. The programme is designed for highly motivated students seeking advanced training and research opportunities in these cutting-edge fields.
PhD students at HBIGS work independently under the supervision of a principal investigator and participate in a structured curriculum. After acceptance into a specific PhD project, students attend a three-week Core Course and become active members of the graduate school. The programme includes regular presentations and discussions with a thesis advisory committee, additional courses, lectures by guest scientists, career development advising, summer schools, and opportunities for networking with fellow PhD students and principal investigators. Extramural activities and international guest lecturers further enrich the academic experience.
There are no tuition fees for the programme. Students pay a semester contribution of approximately 150 EUR. Living expenses in Heidelberg are estimated at 550-800 EUR per month, with off-campus rent ranging from 300-500 EUR. An 'all-inclusive service package' for on-campus living is available for about 3,650 EUR per year, covering accommodation, meals, health insurance, public transport, a personal computer, and internet access.
Funding is available for all PhD positions, which are paid and designed to cover living expenses. The university provides additional funding opportunities and support for career development, preparing graduates for premium positions in academia and beyond.
Applicants must hold a university degree from an internationally accredited institution that qualifies them for a PhD programme in biosciences in their home country. This may be a Master's, 'Licentiate', or 'Diplom' in natural sciences or equivalent. English proficiency is required, with non-native speakers needing to provide TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge CAE scores. Those who completed an undergraduate programme in English must submit a certificate from their faculty.
Applications are accepted throughout the year via the online application system. Open PhD positions are advertised weekly, and admission rounds occur regularly. For more information and to apply, visit the HBIGS application portal.
