Description

The Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI) is offering three fully funded PhD positions within the HER-CARE Doctoral Network, focusing on hereditary and early-onset breast cancer epidemiology. This opportunity is part of a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions-Doctoral network, which brings together leading academic and industrial partners to advance research in early-onset and hereditary breast cancer. The HER-CARE network aims to characterize risk factors, develop innovative risk stratification and screening approaches, and identify multi-modal markers to improve clinical outcomes and decision-making for breast cancer patients. PhD candidates will join a dynamic, international research environment, collaborating with scientists across disciplines and institutions. The projects include: (1) identifying risk and protective factors for second breast cancer subtypes, (2) developing risk models and online tools for shared decision-making in risk management, and (3) characterizing genomic signatures of early-onset tumours. Each project involves international academic and non-academic secondments, providing broad professional experience and network-wide training. Applicants should hold an MSc in epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field such as public health, population genetics, or data science. Experience in cancer epidemiology is advantageous. Candidates must have strong academic English skills, a problem-solving attitude, interdisciplinary curiosity, and excellent communication skills for international collaboration. Eligibility for the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network requires that candidates must not have resided or been mainly active in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to recruitment, must not already possess a PhD degree, and must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) before the start of the programme or by September 2026 at the latest. The positions are fully funded for four years, with a gross monthly salary between €3,665 and €4,450, annual holiday pay, end-of-year bonus, travel allowance, and additional benefits. The NKI offers a cutting-edge research environment, access to core facilities, and opportunities for professional development. Interested candidates should apply online, submitting a motivation letter, CV with MSc grades and publications, and contact details of two references as a single document. The application deadline is December 31, 2025, with interviews scheduled in January and February 2026. For further information, visit the official vacancy page or contact [email protected]. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to impactful cancer research and clinical care in a leading European cancer institute.

Funding

The positions are fully funded for four years, with a gross monthly salary between €3,665 and €4,450 based on a 36-hour working week, in line with the OIO scale and depending on experience. Additional benefits include annual holiday pay of 8.33%, a fixed end-of-year bonus of 8.33%, travel allowance, free parking, and discounts on public transport. The contract is temporary for four years, with opportunities for professional development and participation in network-wide training events.

If you have not yet completed your MSc, include your expected graduation date. Qualified candidates will be contacted for interviews in January and February.

Requirements

Applicants must hold an MSc degree in epidemiology, biostatistics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a closely related discipline such as public health, population genetics, or data science. Prior experience in cancer epidemiology is advantageous. Candidates must demonstrate strong academic English skills (written and spoken), a problem-solving mindset, interdisciplinary curiosity, and excellent communication skills for international team collaboration.
