About this position

This PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to advance sustainable process engineering by intensifying the valorization of biomass into high-value chemicals and materials. The project is embedded within the Sustainable Process Engineering (SPE) group, a collaborative and internationally connected team at the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. The research focuses on developing innovative reactor and process concepts that enable selective conversion of complex lignocellulosic biomass through advanced catalysis, intensified transport phenomena, and integrated reaction-separation systems.

The successful candidate will design and optimize integrated reactor concepts, combining sequential catalytic reactions with in-situ separation, using a multi-scale approach that couples catalyst development, kinetic and mass-transfer studies, and reactor modeling with experimental validation. The overarching goal is to realize compact, efficient reactor systems that contribute to the transition from fossil-based to renewable chemical production, supporting the development of circular, decentralized, and sustainable chemical processes.

The position offers full-time employment for four years, with a competitive salary (scale P: €3,059 - €3,881 per month), year-end bonus, vacation pay, pension scheme, and additional benefits such as paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, and a tax compensation scheme for international candidates. The university provides a dynamic, interdisciplinary, and supportive environment, with access to high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, and on-campus facilities.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field. Experience with biomass conversion and catalysis engineering is a plus. Strong analytical skills, creativity, initiative, and the ability to work in interdisciplinary and international teams are essential. Excellent English communication skills are required. The selection process includes an interview, scientific presentation, and a writing assignment.

To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, CV (including publications and references), and all requested documents via the online application portal. Only complete applications will be considered. The position will remain open until filled, with a priority deadline of April 6, 2026. For further information, contact Prof. Fernanda Neira D’Angelo ([email protected]) or visit the SPE group website.
