About this position

The Bonn International Graduate School for Development Research (BIGS-DR) at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, offers a structured and interdisciplinary PhD programme focused on development research. The University of Bonn is recognized as one of Germany’s Universities of Excellence and hosts 12 International Graduate Schools, including BIGS-DR. Established in 1999, BIGS-DR provides outstanding opportunities for doctoral candidates interested in sustainable development, international collaboration, and tailored academic training.

Research topics at ZEF cover a broad spectrum, including agriculture, land use, climate change, water resources management, biodiversity, food and nutrition, health, gender, migration, mobility, urbanisation, governance, conflict, markets, and innovation and science policy. The programme is designed for those aiming for careers in research, project development, implementation, or policy-making in the field of sustainable development.

The full-time doctoral programme lasts approximately three and a half years, during which students participate in coursework, field research, and thesis completion. Additional workshops on academic writing, intercultural skills, leadership, and ethics are provided to enhance career prospects. Students are supported by a team of supervisors and senior researchers, ensuring intensive supervision and tutorship throughout their studies. Upon successful completion, graduates receive a doctoral degree from one of the University of Bonn’s faculties, such as agriculture, natural sciences, social sciences, or economics.

BIGS-DR is highly international, with over 500 students from 100 countries having participated. Each cohort consists of 20–30 students from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The programme features international guest lecturers, intercultural training, and collaborative projects with partners in Germany and abroad. Students benefit from a vibrant academic environment and international networking opportunities.

There are no tuition fees for the programme, but students must pay a semester contribution of about 330 EUR, which covers a public transport pass and accident insurance. The cost of living in Bonn is estimated at around 1,300 EUR per month, with research costs varying by project. While the university does not offer direct funding, the DAAD EPOS scholarship is available for eligible candidates. Accommodation support is available, but dorm rooms are limited.

Applicants must hold an excellent Master’s or equivalent degree (GPA >3.0 US or >2.0 German), have at least two years of relevant work experience, present an innovative research concept, and demonstrate certified English proficiency (IELTS band 6, TOEFL 550/213/80, or university waiver). The last MA degree should have been obtained within the past six years. Application deadlines are 31 August for DAAD EPOS scholarship applicants and 1 May for those with secured funding, for an October start.

The University of Bonn provides comprehensive support for international students, including career advisory services, welcome events, cultural and linguistic preparation, and assistance with visa matters. The central Career Service and iStart programme offer guidance on job applications and career planning in Germany. For more information and to apply, visit the BIGS-DR application portal.
