About this position

The Konstanz Research School Chemical Biology (KoRS-CB) at the University of Konstanz offers a doctoral programme designed to prepare the next generation of chemical biologists to address the fundamental challenge of explaining life processes in chemical terms. The programme fosters an interdisciplinary academic environment, combining education and research across five main areas: Synthetic Chemistry, Cellular Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biophysics, and Computational Life Science.

Doctoral researchers benefit from a tailored training programme and intensive supervision by interdisciplinary thesis committees, ensuring high educational standards and professional research progress. Each thesis committee consists of three members, including the direct supervisor and at least one member from another department involved in KoRS-CB. Regular meetings and discussions support timely completion of research projects.

The curriculum includes lecture series, courses, and retreats, with doctoral researchers actively organising poster sessions and retreats to share research topics and ideas. Annual scientific workshops and transferable skills training (such as academic presenting, intercultural communication, project management, and career development) are provided. Special mentoring is available to support female scientists in their academic careers.

International elements are integrated through guest lecturers and courses led with foreign partners. All courses are conducted in English, and the programme welcomes students from diverse backgrounds. Tuition fees are waived, but students must pay semester contributions (administrative fee: 80 EUR, student service fee: 115 EUR, student body fee: 14 EUR). No funding opportunities are available within the university, so students should plan accordingly.

Applicants must have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in biology, chemistry, life science, or related subjects, with marks significantly above average and a demonstrated interest in chemical biology. Outstanding Master's students from the Departments of Biology and Chemistry at the University of Konstanz may enrol via the 'Konstanz Fast Track' system. Proof of English proficiency is required.

Applications are accepted year-round with no deadline. Prospective students should apply online at www.chembiol.uni-konstanz.de/. The university provides support for international students and doctoral candidates, including welcome events, visa assistance, help with accommodation, and registration procedures. Accommodation options include apartments, flat shares, and residence halls managed by the university. For more information, visit the Welcome Centre website.

The KoRS-CB doctoral programme offers structured research, supervision, and career advisory services, making it an excellent opportunity for students interested in interdisciplinary chemical biology research at a leading German institution.
