About this position
The International Max Planck Research School for Cognitive NeuroImaging (IMPRS CoNI) at Leipzig University offers a world-class PhD programme designed to nurture the next generation of scientists in the highly interdisciplinary field of human neuroscience. The programme is delivered in cooperation with Leipzig University, Technical University of Dresden, and University College London, integrating international excellence and providing access to cutting-edge research and infrastructure.
IMPRS CoNI covers a broad spectrum of research, including cognitive neuroscience, clinical and translational neuroscience, neuroimaging, computational neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. Students benefit from access to state-of-the-art imaging and neurostimulation methods such as MRI (including the rare Connectom MRI system), EEG, MEG, PET-MRI, near-infrared spectroscopy, TMS, and tDCS, as well as high-performance computing facilities for computational modelling and data analysis.
The curriculum is structured around three core modules: Cognitive Neuroscience, Clinical and Translational Neuroscience, and Development of Neuroimaging Methods and Computational Modelling. Teaching is conducted entirely in English, with hybrid and digital formats to accommodate both on-site and remote participation. The programme emphasises active learning through flipped classrooms, blended learning, and practical exercises, complemented by summer schools, retreats, and workshops.
Each doctoral researcher is supported by a Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC), ensuring individualised guidance and a structured development plan. The IMPRS CoNI applies a credit point system (minimum 26 ECTS), supported by all participating faculties, to streamline curricular requirements. Diversity and equal opportunity are central values, with a student body representing 18 countries and 68% international participants.
Funding is available for most doctoral researchers through contracts based on the German TVöD system, with a monthly gross salary of approximately 3,098 EUR for three years and a possible one-year extension. Additional funding sources include departmental and third-party grants, as well as scholarships. All students receive support for attending conferences and workshops.
Applicants must hold an excellent Master’s degree (or equivalent) in relevant fields, with research experience and proficiency in English (minimum TOEFL or IELTS scores required). Exceptional Bachelor’s degree holders may be admitted after completing an orientation phase and passing an aptitude exam. The programme is committed to recruiting motivated, independent, and talented students from diverse backgrounds, with special encouragement for underrepresented groups in science.
Leipzig is a vibrant city with a rich cultural heritage, offering an attractive environment for study and research. Accommodation is available through the Studentenwerk or private market, and the university provides comprehensive support for international students, including visa assistance, buddy programmes, and welcome events.
For application deadlines and further information, visit the IMPRS CoNI website. Applications are submitted online, and prospective students should prepare all required documents and review eligibility criteria carefully.
