The Graduate School of Economics, Finance, and Management (GSEFM) at Goethe University Frankfurt offers a comprehensive PhD programme in cooperation with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Technische Universität Darmstadt. The programme is designed for students seeking rigorous training in economics, finance, marketing, and accounting, with all courses conducted exclusively in English. The full-time programme spans eight semesters and begins in the winter semester, with pre-semester courses starting in mid-September.

Students can choose from four tracks—Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Accounting—each providing a strong foundation in theory, empirical analysis, and methodological frameworks. The first year focuses on core courses such as macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, mathematical methods, and programming languages, followed by qualifying examinations. The second year offers advanced field courses across all tracks, including development and international economics, management, and research seminars to deepen skills in academic writing and presentation.

The dissertation phase includes structured elements like a third-year research paper, guided teaching requirements, transferable skills courses, and a job market course to prepare students for academic and professional careers. Graduates have secured positions at leading universities and international institutions, including Cambridge, Columbia, INSEAD, Oxford, IMF, World Bank, ECB, and private sector consultancies.

PhD students are eligible for assistantship positions, with most securing teaching or research roles by their second year. Financial aid is available in the form of first-year stipends and assistantships for subsequent years. There are no tuition fees, but an administrative fee of about 377 EUR per semester covers public transport and museum access. The cost of living in Frankfurt is estimated at around 1,000 EUR per month, including rent, food, insurance, and semester contributions.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree and demonstrate strong English proficiency (TOEFL/iBT 93, TOEFL/PBT 580, IELTS 7.0, or equivalent). Applications are reviewed in three stages, with deadlines on 31 January, 31 March, and 31 May. Early application is recommended for financial aid and visa arrangements.
