About this position
The PhD Research Fellowship in AI, Politics and Society at KU Leuven offers an outstanding opportunity to join the Leuven International and European Studies (LINES) research group within the Faculty of Social Sciences. LINES collaborates closely with the Centre for Research on Peace and Development (CRPD), a multidisciplinary centre dedicated to conceptual, empirical, and applied research on building peaceful and cohesive societies. The new research line focuses on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on government, business, and everyday life, exploring both opportunities and the political and societal challenges that arise.
This fellowship seeks a highly motivated doctoral candidate eager to connect political and social analysis with the growing influence of AI on international politics and society. The successful candidate will contribute to collective responsibilities within the research group, including educational services, team meetings, research proposals, supervision of students, and recruitment activities. The position encourages interdisciplinary approaches, welcoming applicants with backgrounds in political science, sociology, or related disciplines, and values interdisciplinary experience combining social sciences with computer science.
Applicants should possess a Master’s degree with first-class or upper second-class honours, demonstrate excellent analytical skills, and be comfortable with both quantitative and qualitative research methods. Familiarity with the political and societal implications of AI and machine learning is essential, as is proficiency in English for academic communication. Candidates must submit a short research statement outlining their proposed research ideas, context, significance, and intended methods. Topics may include AI’s role in reshaping international politics, state strategies and regulation for geopolitical influence, public acceptance of AI, AI in policymaking, distributional consequences, and effects on citizens’ trust in government institutions.
The fellowship provides a monthly scholarship in line with KU Leuven standards, initially for one year and extendable up to four years. Benefits include social security, insurance coverage, training opportunities, and support for conference participation and methodological training. The research environment is dynamic and international, offering strong support for academic and professional development. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, fostering a respectful and socially safe environment for all.
To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, CV, research statement (max. 2 pages), copy of their Master’s thesis, and full degree transcripts. Short-listed candidates will be invited for an interview. For further information, applicants may contact Prof. dr. Arnim Langer at [email protected]. The application deadline is March 15, 2026.
