About this position

[£19,237 tax-free stipend per year, tuition fees paid, and a generous study package.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham offers an exciting opportunity to work at the forefront of robotics and manufacturing engineering, in partnership with Rolls-Royce. The project focuses on the design and simulation of stiffness-adjustable robotic systems for performing on-wing repair of aero-engines, addressing key challenges in on-platform manufacturing. The successful candidate will join the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in Manufacturing and On-Wing Technology, where advanced robotic systems are developed to operate in hazardous and confined environments, enabling inspection and active operations such as machining without the need for disassembly.

The research builds on the UTC's unique capabilities in designing, modelling, and realizing robotic systems for restrictive environments. The project aims to develop hybrid robots that combine navigation and task execution, utilizing both hexapod and continuum arm subsystems. Control solutions for automated robotic systems will be explored, including teleoperation via smart human-machine interfaces. This studentship offers a blend of academic and industrial challenges, enhancing the student's ability to tackle complex intellectual and practical aspects of mechatronics, control, and manufacturing.

Applicants should possess a first or upper second class degree in mechanical, mechatronics, robotics, cybernetics, or a related scientific discipline. Essential skills include strong analytical and numerical abilities, experience in developing precision mechanical devices, kinematic and dynamic analysis, finite element modelling, simulation of complex mechatronics, and implementation of control and kinematics with hardware-in-the-loop. Familiarity with software packages such as CREO/SOLIDWORKS, ANSYS/ABAQUS, and MATLAB is expected. A professional, self-dependent work attitude is crucial, and industrial experience is advantageous. Candidates must be able to produce high-quality presentations and written reports.

The scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of £19,237 per year, covers tuition fees, and includes a generous study package. Applications are primarily open to UK candidates, but outstanding international applicants demonstrating exceptional suitability are also considered. To apply, candidates should email their CV, cover letter, and academic transcripts to Dr Xin Dong at [email protected]. Please contact Dr Xin Dong for further information before submitting a formal application. Applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis until a suitable candidate is appointed, and only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

This studentship is ideal for those seeking to advance their expertise in robotics, mechatronics, and manufacturing engineering, with strong links to industrial applications and preparation for a high-impact research or industrial career.
