About this position
This PhD studentship at Newcastle University's Biosciences Institute offers an exciting opportunity to investigate spatiotemporal population dynamics for neural decoding within the field of neurotechnology. The project focuses on understanding how large-scale neural populations encode information, leveraging advanced techniques in artificial intelligence, data analysis, and mathematical modelling. Students will work at the intersection of neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and computational methods, contributing to the development of next-generation brain-computer interfaces and neural engineering solutions.
Supervised by Dr ASK Kraskov, the research will involve both theoretical and applied approaches to neural data, aiming to uncover new principles of neural computation and information processing. The successful candidate will join a vibrant research community at Newcastle University, benefiting from state-of-the-art facilities and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Funding covers 100% of home tuition fees and provides an annual stipend at the UKRI rate (~£19,000 per year). Please note that international fees (~£20,000 per year) are not covered, and international applicants must be able to fund the difference. The studentship is open to candidates with a strong background in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics, or related disciplines. Experience in data analysis, mathematical modelling, or artificial intelligence is highly desirable.
Applicants should prepare a CV, academic transcripts, and a personal statement outlining their research interests and suitability for the project. The application deadline is 1 May 2026. For further details and to apply, visit the project page or contact the supervisor for informal inquiries.
