About this position
Imperial College London invites applications for a PhD studentship in Water-Based Lubrication, supported by the EPSRC/Shell IDLA award. This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in tribology, lubrication, and sustainable engineering solutions. The project focuses on developing novel water-based lubricants for electric vehicles and environmentally-friendly hydraulic systems, aiming to minimize environmental impact while maintaining machine efficiency, durability, and reliability.
The research will explore the fundamental aspects governing the performance of water-based polymer solutions as lubricants. Key objectives include designing aqueous lubricants based on polymer solutions, studying sustainable formulations, and achieving film characteristics comparable to conventional lubricants. The project employs advanced experimental techniques such as high shear rate viscometry, film thickness measurement rigs, rolling-sliding tribometers, and in-contact fluorescence to analyze lubricant films, local viscosity, and rheological properties. In-house modeling will be used to predict the behavior of newly developed fluids in various applications relevant to Shell.
Applicants should possess a 2:1 honours degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials, physics, or a related subject. Essential qualities include an enquiring and rigorous approach to research, strong intellect, disciplined work habits, and a keen interest in experimental research. Good team-working, observational, and communication skills are required. EPSRC candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the award, and all applicants must satisfy the academic requirements for PhD enrolment at Imperial College London.
The studentship provides a bursary and covers fees at the UK student rate. For further information about research in this area, visit the Mechanical Engineering research pages at Imperial College London. Interested applicants should send an up-to-date CV to Dr Janet Wong ([email protected]). Suitable candidates will be required to complete an electronic application form via the College Registry. The application deadline is 14 May 2026, but applications will be considered until the post is filled.
