About this position

The University of Nottingham is offering a PhD studentship focused on modelling the reliability and resilience of hydrogen systems to enhance safety and sustainability. With the global push towards net-zero carbon targets, green hydrogen is poised to become a key component of integrated energy systems between 2025 and 2030. Despite its promise, widespread commercial adoption of hydrogen technology is hindered by concerns over reliability, safety, and cost, particularly in electrochemical systems.

This research project aims to develop advanced modelling and analysis techniques for hydrogen systems, including electrolysers and their balance of plant (BoP) components. The work will address several critical challenges: diagnostics and prognostics for early detection of deterioration and failure modes, system-level reliability analysis for improved safety, asset management models to support inspection and maintenance decisions, and strategies to enhance system adaptability and emergency response mechanisms in the face of failures or external disturbances.

By improving safety and efficiency through these innovative analysis tools, the project seeks to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen energy solutions and contribute to significant reductions in carbon emissions. The studentship offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering, sustainability, and energy systems, with the potential for real-world impact.

Applicants should hold a 1st class degree in engineering, mathematics, or a related discipline, preferably at the master's level. In exceptional cases, candidates with a 2:1 degree may be considered.
