About this position
Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral position in hyperspectral imaging within the Department of Physics and Astronomy (WE05 - Fysica en Sterrenkunde). This multidisciplinary project aims to advance material classification in waste streams using state-of-the-art X-ray detectors, including both conventional photon-counting and hyperspectral types. The research will focus on exploiting the spectral capacities of new X-ray detectors to distinguish different metals in mixed waste streams, contributing to environmental sustainability and materials science.
The successful candidate will set up and validate a simulation framework for high-Z sensor detectors, conduct sensitivity studies, and generate input data for material classification based on experimental results. Responsibilities include publishing research findings in scientific journals, presenting at international conferences, and contributing to the supervision of master and PhD students. At least 70% of the assignment will be dedicated to academic research.
Applicants must hold a thesis-based PhD (obtained within the last 6 years) in physics, engineering, or a related field. Required qualifications include experience with high-resolution X-ray imaging setups, strong programming skills in image processing and analysis, and a proven track record in scientific publications related to photon-counting X-ray detectors. Candidates should demonstrate independence, creativity, and a solution-driven approach, as well as proficiency in English. Experience supervising students is advantageous.
The position offers a contract of indefinite duration for up to 30 months, starting as early as April 1, 2026. Remuneration follows the PD1 salary scale, and Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training opportunities, 36 days of annual holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers. The university is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, encouraging all qualified candidates to apply.
To apply, submit your application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before April 13, 2026. Required documents include your CV and academic transcript (merged as one PDF), cover letter, and diploma transcript. Applications sent by email will not be considered. For further information about the vacancy, contact Professor Matthieu Boone at [email protected]. For questions regarding the application process, email [email protected].
