About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship in seaweed hydrodynamics within the Department of Marine Technology, located in Trondheim, Norway. This position is part of the SFI Seaweed Centre for Research-based Innovation, a major initiative funded by the Research Council of Norway and managed by SINTEF Ocean, focusing on the industrialization of seaweed production and the design of floating seaweed facilities.

The research aims to advance understanding of hydrodynamic loads on seaweed and macro algae, particularly the hydroelastic behavior of seaweed growing on longlines exposed to waves and currents. The project addresses the lack of robust hydrodynamic load models, with the goal of developing accountable models to support the design and operation of large-scale seaweed farms. The work is highly interdisciplinary, involving marine technology, biology, biotechnology, and product development, and will be conducted in collaboration with industry and research partners.

As a postdoctoral fellow, you will carry out high-quality research, publish academic and popular science outputs, participate in the Marine Structures research group, mentor students, and engage in SFI Seaweed activities. The position offers a stimulating environment with committed colleagues, access to employee benefits, and favorable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. Diversity and inclusion are core values at NTNU, and the university encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in marine structures or marine hydrodynamics, or be in the final phase with documented thesis submission or defense date. Experience in both theoretical and experimental hydrodynamics is required, along with strong English communication skills. Preferred qualifications include formal skills in hydroelasticity and publications in seaweed hydrodynamics. Personal qualities such as independence, motivation, adaptability, and constructive engagement are highly valued.

The application process requires submission of CV, diplomas, certificates, doctoral thesis or draft, research plan, academic works, recommendation letters, and contact information for three referees. If education was completed abroad, documentation of scope and quality is needed. Applications must be submitted electronically via jobbnorge.no by April 17, 2026. Only applications received by the deadline will be considered, and certified copies of documentation may be requested at interview.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 604,900 before tax, with a 2% deduction for pension fund contribution. The employment period is 3 years and is conditional on external funding. NTNU provides a supportive environment for professional and social interaction, and expects employees to be physically present and available at the institution.

For further information, contact Associate Professor David Kristiansen at [email protected]. For recruitment process queries, contact HR advisor Marit Ringseth Gjersvold at [email protected]. For practical information about working at NTNU, visit the university website.

Trondheim offers a vibrant cultural scene, excellent welfare services, and opportunities for education, nature, and family life. NTNU is committed to creating knowledge for a better world and welcomes candidates who share this vision.
