About this position

The Tarhan Geobiology Lab in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University is seeking applications for a full-time postdoctoral researcher to join an interdisciplinary project focused on marine sediment biogeochemistry in warming coastal environments. The position is part of the funded research project, Marine Coastal Ecosystems in a Warming World, and is supported by the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies Hutchinson Environmental Program. The research aims to advance understanding of the biogeochemical and ecological consequences of warming and environmental stressors on coastal ocean ecosystems, with a particular focus on Long Island Sound and broader global coastal systems.

The postdoctoral associate will lead diagenetic modeling investigations to quantify the impact of warming on seafloor carbon cycling, bottom-water oxygen, nutrient levels, and bioturbation. The role involves working closely with a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Lidya Tarhan (primary mentor), Dr. Martina Dal Bello, Dr. Elizabeth Yankovsky, Dr. Mary Beth Decker, Dr. Pincelli Hull, and Dr. David Vasseur, all at Yale. The successful candidate will also collaborate with other postdocs and participate in laboratory-based incubation experiments and fieldwork in Long Island Sound.

Key responsibilities include performing diagenetic modeling simulations, collaborating with team members to understand the impact of future warming on ocean properties, and contributing to team-wide communication of research findings through publications, presentations, and outreach. The position offers a unique opportunity to pursue biogeochemical research in a highly interdisciplinary environment.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in biogeochemistry or a related field, experience in geochemical and diagenetic modeling, a strong publication record, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The position is fully funded for up to two years, with a starting salary of $68,500 and up to $10,000 per year for research and travel.
