About this position
The Institute of Earth Sciences (ISTerre) at Université Grenoble Alpes, in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) and Andra, is offering a fully funded 18-month postdoctoral position focused on active seismic tomography using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) data. The research is part of the Cigéo deep geological disposal project for radioactive waste, with the successful candidate working on the characterization and monitoring of the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) around a large-diameter gallery at the Andra Underground Research Laboratory in Bure, France.
The postdoc will develop a 4D seismic imaging and monitoring methodology using DAS, produce multi-attribute tomographic models of the EDZ, acquire and process new seismic datasets, and develop transferable processing tools for the geophysical community. The candidate will publish methodological and scientific findings and have the opportunity for visit periods in Copenhagen at GEUS.
Key requirements include a PhD in geophysics, seismology, or a related field, strong expertise in signal processing and seismic imaging, proficiency in scientific programming (Python, MATLAB, or equivalent), solid experience with inversion methods and first-arrival seismic tomography, and demonstrated ability to write scientific publications in English. Desired assets include experience with DAS, Coda Wave Interferometry, VSP data processing, geomechanics, and field acquisition campaigns.
The research context involves studies at the Andra Underground Research Laboratory, focusing on the temporal evolution and monitoring of the damaged zone using DAS, which offers advantages such as exceptional spatial density, continuous coverage, permanent installation, and robustness under harsh underground conditions. The project aims to optimize methodologies for high-quality seismic data acquisition and interpretation, benefiting both industrial and academic geophysical communities.
Applications from women and underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged. Appointment is based on merit alone. The application deadline is 30 April 2026, 1:00 PM CET, with an expected start date in June 2026. To apply, send a single PDF including your CV, cover letter, and contact details of one referee to Aurélien Mordret ([email protected]) and Philippe Guéguen ([email protected]).
Funding details
