About this position

The Hannover Centre for Optical Technologies (HOT), the Cluster of Excellence PhoenixD, and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Leibniz University Hannover invite applications for a postdoctoral researcher position in computational electrodynamics and inverse design of time-varying metamaterials, funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant TEMPORE under Horizon Europe. This pioneering project focuses on the development of advanced computational frameworks for the inverse design of metamaterials operating on picosecond to femtosecond timescales, enabling new ways to control light in space and time for reprogrammable, multifunctional nanophotonic systems.

The successful candidate will work under the scientific direction of Professor Antonio Calà Lesina, contributing to the design, architecture, and long-term development of the computational platform for the ERC TEMPORE project. Key responsibilities include algorithm development for time-domain inverse design frameworks, scalable and memory-efficient high-performance implementations targeting distributed-memory (MPI) and GPU architectures, and the definition and implementation of a modular, open-source inverse design software framework. The role also involves extending large-scale computational electrodynamics solvers (FDTD and related methods) for dynamic and nonlinear materials, modeling advanced materials such as transparent conductive oxides and ultrafast tunable media, and leading methodological subprojects in close coordination with the PI.

Collaboration is central to this position, with opportunities to co-supervise doctoral researchers, work closely with experimental partners, publish high-impact research, and present at international conferences. The project offers access to world-class research infrastructure within HOT and PhoenixD, freedom to develop original mathematical and algorithmic contributions, and strong support for career development, international networking, and scientific visibility. Family-friendly policies and flexible working arrangements are available, with part-time employment possible upon request.

Applicants must hold a completed university science degree (PhD or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as physics, photonics, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, or related fields. Essential qualifications include strong programming skills in C/C++ (Python or similar preferred), experience with numerical methods for differential equations (FDTD, FEM, time-domain methods), computational electromagnetics, high-performance computing, parallel programming (MPI, GPU), and scientific software development. Experience in inverse design and optimization (adjoint methods, topology optimization), a proven record of independent research and publications in leading journals, and a background in nonlinear and/or ultrafast optics are desirable. Excellent English language skills are required.

To apply, submit your application including CV, degree certificates and transcripts, names of two references, and a cover letter addressing your motivation, career goals, and qualifications by April 30th, 2026 via email to [email protected]. Leibniz University Hannover values equal opportunities and diversity, welcoming applications from all backgrounds. Preference will be given to equally-qualified candidates with disabilities.
