Description

Griffith University is seeking a highly motivated Research Fellow to join the School of Environment and Science and the Australian Rivers Institute in Brisbane South (Nathan). The position focuses on soil biogeochemistry modelling, integrating soil science, mathematical modelling, and spectra-based technology. The successful candidate will research soil carbon dynamics and biogeochemical processes using advanced process-based technologies and modelling techniques, contributing to both research excellence and teaching innovation in environmental and soil sciences. The role involves 60% research, 30% teaching, and 10% service, including developing and applying mathematical and spectra-based models to predict soil biogeochemical properties, publishing in high-impact journals, presenting at conferences, supervising research students, and collaborating with external stakeholders. The interdisciplinary team is led by Professor Chengrong Chen and Dr Yunying Fang, offering opportunities to work at the forefront of soil science and data analytics, aiming to improve understanding of soil carbon processes and long-term carbon sequestration. Applicants must hold a PhD in Soil Science, Computer Science, Environmental Science, Geoinformatics, Machine Learning, or a related field, with experience in hyperspectral/spectroscopic/computational analysis of soils, proficiency in machine learning (Python, R, MATLAB), and a strong publication record. The position offers a competitive salary (AUD 113,226 - AUD 134,460 per annum plus 17% superannuation), generous leave entitlements, health and wellbeing initiatives, and potential VISA sponsorship. Griffith University values diversity, inclusion, and flexibility, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds. Applications close on Friday, 30 January 2026. To apply, submit your application online, including a cover letter, CV, and referee details. For further information, contact Dr Yunying Fang or Ms Corinna Gartrell. For more details, visit the official job posting.

Funding

This is a full-time, fixed-term (3 years) Research Fellow Grade 2 position with a salary range of AUD 113,226 - AUD 134,460 per annum plus 17% superannuation. The total package is AUD 132,474 - AUD 157,318 per annum. Additional benefits include salary packaging options, corporate health discounts, paid parental leave, leave loading, and access to on-campus gym facilities. VISA sponsorship may be available.
