About this position

Six fully funded PhD student positions are available in Peatland Ecology at Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. The research group is seeking talented and self-motivated PhD students to join projects focused on various aspects of peatland ecology, including agricultural drainage impacts, vulnerability to wildfire, carbon cycling, vegetation and microbial dynamics, peatland pond mapping, and heavy metal mobility under climate change and human activities. The projects are supervised by Professor Jianghua Wu and offer a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in environmental science and biology.

Each position targets a specific research area: (1) agricultural drainage effects on carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions, (2) vulnerability of boreal peatlands to wildfire and climate change, (3) development of an ecophysiological model for carbon cycling, (4) vegetation and microbial dynamics under climate and human disturbance, (5) mapping peatland ponds and estimating peatland biomass and carbon storage, and (6) heavy metal mobility in boreal peatlands due to human activities and climate change.

Applicants should be highly motivated, with a strong academic background and interest in peatland ecology, climate change, and environmental science. International students must provide evidence of English proficiency. Required application materials include a letter of motivation, academic resume, CV, unofficial transcripts, and any publications. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for further discussion.

All positions are fully funded, covering tuition and providing a stipend for living expenses. The research group offers a collaborative environment and access to state-of-the-art facilities for ecological and environmental research. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in advancing their careers in environmental science, biology, and climate change research.
