Fully Funded PhD in Flood Risk Perception and Climate Adaptation at University College Dublin

University College Dublin (UCD) is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD scholarship in the field of Flood Risk Perception and Climate Adaptation, based in the Environmental Policy group. The project will use social surveys to examine attitudes toward flood-risk management, focusing on the transition from engineered solutions to multifaceted approaches that integrate risk perception, awareness, preparedness, and behavioral responses to climate-related hazards. The research will involve comparative spatial analysis using both new and existing datasets, and may include travel to Chang’an University in Xi’an, China. The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Eoin O'Neill and Dr Finbarr Brereton, both of whom are experienced in environmental policy and flood risk research. The Environmental Policy group at UCD is internationally recognized for its research excellence and policy impact, offering a collaborative and creative research environment. The scholarship includes a tax-free stipend of €25,000 per annum for four years, full tuition waiver for EU and non-EU students, funding for research costs and conference travel, and access to UCD’s career development and networking opportunities. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline such as economics, psychology, urban planning, or a related social science. Additional requirements include expertise in geospatial analysis (e.g., GIS), spatial data analysis, motivation for policy-relevant research, research experience, strong organizational and communication skills, and proficiency in English (meeting UCD’s language requirements).
