PhD in NeuroAI: Cognitive Computation in Biological and Artificial Intelligence

This PhD opportunity at Ulster University invites candidates to explore the frontiers of NeuroAI, working at the intersection of neuroscience, cognitive science, and artificial intelligence. The project aims to unravel the computational foundations of decision-making in both biological brains and artificial systems, leveraging advanced AI and machine learning techniques to analyze neural and behavioural data. By studying how humans and animals make decisions, and by designing novel AI algorithms inspired by brain function, the research seeks to bridge gaps between natural and artificial intelligence. Based at the Intelligent Systems Research Centre within the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, the successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary environment. The project draws on the strengths of Ulster’s Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience, Neurotechnology, AI/ML, and Computational Biology communities, offering access to both open and proprietary datasets from Ulster’s labs and international collaborators. Training will be provided in key areas including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational modelling of behaviour and brain function, high-performance computing, applied mathematics, statistics, neuroscience, and cognitive science. Ulster University is renowned for its supportive, research-intensive environment and is ranked 2nd in the UK for PhD researcher satisfaction. The Computer Science Research Institute is one of the largest and most impactful in the country, providing an excellent foundation for ambitious research. Applicants should have a strong academic background in computer science, neuroscience, cognitive science, mathematics, engineering, or related fields. Experience or keen interest in AI, ML, computational modelling, or data analysis is highly desirable, along with proficiency in programming and quantitative skills. International candidates may need to demonstrate English language proficiency. The application deadline is February 27, 2026. Prospective students are encouraged to apply online via the Ulster University PhD portal, preparing a CV, academic transcripts, and a personal statement. Informal inquiries to the supervisors are welcome. This project offers a unique opportunity to shape the future of AI and deepen our understanding of the mind, supported by a world-class research environment and expert supervision.
