Advanced Lasers for Quantum Enhanced Microscopy

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Quantum Technology Engineering, focuses on developing advanced entangled photon sources for quantum enhanced microscopy. The aim is to enable high-resolution, label-free, deep-tissue imaging by combining mid-infrared probing with near-infrared detection, leveraging quantum physics to overcome the limitations of classical microscopy in biomedical research. Quantum enhanced microscopy offers significant improvements in resolution, sensitivity, and speed compared to traditional optical imaging, making it a promising tool for biomedical applications such as cancer biology and neuroscience. The project will develop laser systems capable of efficiently generating entangled photons at different wavelengths: one in the mid-infrared to probe the sample and the other in the near-infrared to carry the image information. This approach allows the use of high-performance near-infrared detectors while capturing the molecular-specific contrast benefits of mid-infrared imaging, enabling deeper tissue penetration and label-free observation of living tissues. The successful candidate will receive substantial training in scientific, technical, and commercial skills, and will be part of a vibrant research community. Funding is competitive, with UK students eligible for a 4-year UKRI TechExpert tax-free stipend of approximately £31k per year, and studentships at the UKRI base rate available for EU, Horizon Europe, and International students. Overseas students with external funding are also encouraged to apply. The University of Southampton is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusivity, and supports applicants seeking part-time study. The institution offers onsite childcare facilities and is recognized for its commitment to sustainability. Applicants should hold at least a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent and submit a CV, two academic references, degree transcripts/certificates, and proof of English language proficiency if required. The application deadline for international students is 31 March 2026, and for UK students is 31 July 2026.
