Postdoctoral Researcher in Violence & Violence Prevention (0.8 - 1.0 FTE)

Leiden University’s Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in violence and violence prevention. This 3-year position (0.8–1.0 FTE) is based in The Hague and is part of the Violence & Violence Prevention research group. The successful candidate will conduct independent and collaborative research on how despair, institutional and structural inequalities manifest in interpersonal, collective, and self-directed violence. The research focuses on the 'Deaths of Despair' theme, examining the intersection of emotion, social processes, and violence, and the role of governance and security actors in prevention and impact reduction. The postdoc will join a multidisciplinary team, contributing to ISGA’s strategic theme on mental health and producing high-quality, co-authored publications for academic and non-academic audiences. Responsibilities include quantitative data collection and analysis, supporting the institute’s research strategy, and assisting with teaching in minor, bachelor, and master programs, including the MSc in Crisis and Security Management. Supervision of theses and capstone projects is also expected. The position offers a competitive salary (€4728–€6433 gross per month, scale 11), a 3-year contract (1 year + 2 years extension upon good performance), 8% holiday allowance, 8.3% end-of-year bonus, attractive pension scheme, flexible working hours, a minimum of 29 leave days, options for extra leave, paid parental leave, hybrid working options, home-working allowance, a university-provided laptop, and full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs. The successful candidate must reside in The Netherlands prior to starting the contract. Applicants must hold a PhD in sociology, criminology, psychology, epidemiology, political science, or a related field, with demonstrable quantitative research experience on violence-related topics. A promising publication record, experience with research-led teaching, passion for education, and commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration are essential. Excellent English proficiency is required, and willingness to work towards Dutch proficiency is expected.
