Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioinformatics of Microbiome-Virus-Host Interactions in Insects
Radboud University Medical Center is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for an exciting international project focused on the bioinformatics of microbiome-virus-host interactions in insects, specifically honeybees. The research aims to unravel the complex interplay between bacteria, bacteriophages, and viral pathogens in honeybee health and immunity. The project is part of the microBEEome initiative, funded by the European Partnership on Animal Health and Welfare, and involves collaboration with leading scientists from Germany, Belgium, Portugal, and the Netherlands.
The successful candidate will join the Laboratory of Experimental Virology in the Department of Medical Microbiology under the supervision of Professor Ronald van Rij. The lab offers a dynamic and stimulating environment, with access to state-of-the-art core facilities in cellular imaging, proteomics, and genomics. The research will involve bioinformatic analyses of immune responses in bees carrying different combinations of bacteria and phages, utilizing mRNA, small RNA, and single-cell RNA sequencing data. There are also opportunities to contribute to ongoing bioinformatic projects within the lab.
Key responsibilities include conducting research on microbiome-virus-host interactions using bioinformatic approaches, collaborating with consortium members, presenting results at meetings and conferences, drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, and supervising students during research internships.
Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant research field and have experience with next-generation sequence data analysis, R and Shell scripting, and data management. Experience with single-cell data analysis is a plus. Candidates should be self-motivated, collaborative, have a strong publication record, and possess excellent communication skills in English. Experimental biologists with significant bioinformatic experience are encouraged to apply.
The position is full-time (36 hours/week) for one year, with the possibility of extension to 2.5 years. The gross monthly salary ranges from €3,598 to €5,669, with additional benefits such as holiday and end-of-year bonuses, vacation hours, commuting allowance, pension contributions, paid parental leave, and support for personal development. Public transport commuting is fully reimbursed, and a home working allowance is provided.
Applications must be submitted via the Radboudumc vacancies portal before 4 February 2026. Interviews will be held between 9-13 February 2026. For more information, visit the official vacancy page or contact the lab directly.
